Curtain Cleaning Melbourne

Clean curtains change how a whole room feels. Dr Drapes has been cleaning Melbourne’s curtains since 1983, and we’re still family owned and operated. We take your curtains down, dry clean them at our own plant in Melton and rehang them, so you never have to get up a ladder.

This isn’t a quick steam on the rod. It’s a full professional dry clean that gets between the face fabric and the lining, where dust, grime and insects hide.

Why we dry clean curtains instead of steaming them in place

On-site steam cleaning only reaches the surface. It can’t clean between the fabric and the lining or behind the curtain, so stains and grime often come back. Water is risky for lined curtains too, because the face fabric and the lining shrink at different rates and the hem can pucker for good.

Dry cleaning uses a solvent instead of water, in a large front-loading machine built for the job. It cleans the whole curtain, lining included. Most professionally made curtains carry a label allowing for up to 3% shrinkage, and our system keeps that risk low, so shrinkage is unlikely in most cases.

Our curtain cleaning process, step by step

  • Free quote. Send us your track widths and curtain heights by phone or email, and we’ll give you a price.
  • Take-down. We take your curtains down and remove the hooks and old plastic shanks.
  • Inspection. We record measurements, fabric condition, any damage and special care needs before cleaning, so there are no surprises later.
  • Spot treatment. Stains are treated before the main clean, and checked again after it.
  • Dry cleaning. Your curtains are cleaned in solvent, then dried at a controlled 40°C.
  • Finishing. Each curtain is aired, steamed and measured, then fitted with new shanks and its hooks.
  • Rehang. We bring them back and rehang them on your tracks.

How long it takes

Allow 5 to 10 working days from take-down to rehang. Many jobs are quicker than that: down on a Monday, back up by Friday.

Need privacy while they’re away? We can supply temporary block-out curtains for a small fee. Moving house or renovating? Ask us about storage.

Fabrics and styles we clean

We clean curtains and drapes of all types and sizes, including:

  • Lined and unlined curtains and drapes
  • Sheers
  • Blockout curtains
  • Velvet, silk, linen and satin
  • Pinch pleat, pencil pleat, S-fold, eyelet, rod pocket and tab top styles
  • Pelmets, swags and tails, and valances
  • Commercial curtains for offices, venues and other businesses

Sun-damaged fabric needs a closer look. Years of sunlight can weaken fibres to the point where they tear, so we check for it during inspection. If a curtain is at risk, we’ll tell you before we clean it, not after.

Got blinds as well? We clean Roman, roller, Venetian and Austrian blinds too.

How much does curtain cleaning cost?

Curtains are priced per metre of track, based on the drop. Standard curtains and drapes are $80 per metre for drops up to 2.4 m. Sheers are $80 per metre up to a 3 m drop, and velvet, silk, linen and satin are $115 per metre up to 2.4 m. Longer drops cost a little more.

Every price includes take-down, cleaning and rehanging, with no callout fee or separate labour charge. See the full price list for longer drops, blinds, pelmets and mould treatment.

To get a quote, measure the width of each track and the height of each curtain from top to bottom. That’s all we need.

Take-down and rehang, included

Every curtain clean includes take-down and rehang. No ladders, and no wrestling heavy drapes off their hooks. We take them down carefully, clean them at our plant and rehang them on your tracks.

With your curtains already down, it’s the ideal time to have your tracks looked at. Our track services team can repair worn tracks and rails or fit new ones on the same job. Repairs are quoted separately, and they’re always optional.

How often should curtains be cleaned?

We recommend a professional clean about every five years. Clean them more often in busy rooms, in homes with a wood heater or open fire, or if anyone at home has allergies.

Spotted mould on the lining? Don’t wait five years. Our mould treatment separates the lining, treats the mould and finishes with a deep dry clean.

Common questions

Can you clean my curtains while they’re hanging? No. A proper dry clean needs plant equipment that can’t come to your home, which is why take-down and rehang are part of every job.

Do I need to take them down myself? No, that’s our job, and it’s included in the price.

Will they smell of chemicals? No. Your curtains are aired after cleaning and deodorised at no extra charge, so they come back smelling fresh.

“I would like to say that I have just got my beautiful curtains and blind back. First clean in nearly 10 years. They look and smell so fresh and clean! Very very happy indeed.”
— Kerry Collinson
